Vacations are the most exciting moments of our entire working lives. There comes a time when we have no energy left to go to work and then a vacation comes to our rescue. As much as it’s fun to get away, those long journeys can sometimes be unbearable. Whether you’re heading to your favourite coastal destination for a holiday getaway or flying to visit family, it’s important to remember to stay safe as you head to your destination. We know how important it is to travel comfortably and arrive ready to enjoy your next adventure, so we asked seasoned travellers for their tips to help you enjoy travelling with dizziness.
1) Call in Advance for Wheelchair Service
If you tire easily, be sure to call your airline and request wheelchair service. Some airlines and airports will take you directly to the gate or baggage claim when you arrive at your destination.
2) Your Medicines First
When you pack your suitcase, don't forget to prepare your medications prescribed by your doctor., Make sure you talk to your doctor about your health condition before going on long trips.
3) Safe Grab Points
If you feel dizzy at any time while sitting, control your breathing. Start focusing on the points of contact with your body in your chair. Where your legs meet the chair, where your arms touch the armrest. Try holding the armrest lightly for an extra point of contact.
4) Control Your Breathing
In the event of an untimely attack of vertigo, if you are standing, sit down as soon as possible, close your eyes, or find a visual focal point (whichever you prefer). Slow your breathing to a comfortable pace and control your breathing. Breathe in slightly deeper than normal and exhale more slowly than normal. Continue this breathing exercise until you feel yourself regaining your sense of balance.
5) Limit Your Head Movements
For many causes of vertigo, keep your head steady and straight, which will help you stay steady on your feet. If you are flying, plan ahead and avoid rushing situations when navigating the airport. Slowing down and giving yourself time to get from point A to point B is key to keeping yourself and your head steady.
6) Focus Points
Find a visual focal point that will help you maintain your balance and lock your eyes on it. This focus has prevented many people with vertigo from falling with very little loss of balance. This focus is best combined with a breathing exercise.
